Australia's Woolworths Liquor Group has agreed to pull its Duff Beer off store shelves due to its close resemblance to that wonderful stuff that Homer Simpson just can’t get enough of, according to news.com.au.
An Alcohol Beverages Advertising Code (ABAC) panel, with the assistance of Simpsons creator Matt Groening, ruled that the beer’s branding, which is nearly identical to the fictional suds often featured in the hit TV series, violates Australia’s voluntary alcohol industry advertising code.
The panel ruled that with The Simpsons so strongly entrenched in Australian popular culture, a product with a name and packaging so closely associated with the fictional suds often featured in the show could appeal to underage kids.
In the hearing, the ABAC panel cited a letter from Groening that stated “an actual beer named Duff might encourage children to drink alcohol."
Woolworths reportedly accept the panel’s decision and halted production of Duff. There's no word on how the stoppage will affect brand spokesman Duffman.
