On May 9 and 10, SAVOR, the Brewers Association’s annual showcase event focusing on craft beer and food pairing returned to DC’s Building Museum after New York hosted last year’s event.
This year’s fete brought representatives of 76 of the nation’s best craft breweries (serving 42 different styles of beer) together with the opportunity to show off two brews, with many breweries pouring rare or limited batches found only at SAVOR. Each sample was accompanied by a specially matched appetizer designed by Brewers Association culinary consultant Adam Dulye, chef/owner of The Monk’s Kettle and The Abbot’s Cellar in San Francisco, and even more deliciousness was found at tables hosted by Choptank Oyster Company, Duke’s Small Batch Smoked Meat, and the American Cheese Society.
Back by popular demand, the private tasting and educational salons offered attending beer geeks the chance to experience guided tastings with the masters themselves. Highlights included unique pairings like Craft Beers & Artisanal Doughnuts with Stone Brewing Co and DC’s own Golden Brown Delicious, an introduction to Saisons, with brewmasters from Virginia’s Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery, and Boulevard, Nebraska, and Odell Brewing Companies, and the best of bourbon barrel-aged brews hosted by Alltech Lexington Brewing and Distilling Co. and Country Boy Brewing.
Each guest left with a special collaboration ale by Firestone Walker Brewing Co. and Flying Dog Brewery, and the revelling continued long into the night with the Smuttynose dance party at Black Cat., the Schlafly after-party at Bier Baron Tavern, and the Bluejacket, Brooklyn Brewery and New Belgium after-party at Churchkey.
